The Lessingtheater in Wolfenbüttel is a theater opened in 1909 and is run by the city of Wolfenbüttel as a guest house.
In the residence Wolfenbüttel, in 1592, the theater of the Wolfenbüttel Castle was founded, Germany's first permanent venue with a permanent ensemble.
Planned by the Brunswick architect Otto Rasche, the theater was built in reinforced concrete construction. The inauguration of the house built in the style of Art Nouveau and Neoclassicism took place after four years of planning and after only one year of construction on 25 September 1909 with the performance of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's Nathan the Wise. The Lessingtheater and the city Wolfenbüttel survived the two world wars undamaged.
The theater received its present name until 1929, until then it was called Stadttheater. Operated as a feature theater, the Lessingtheater has no own ensemble and regularly performs guest performances with a changing program. Until its closure in 2007, it hosted approximately 90 events annually and accommodated up to 699 guests.
