A memorial plaque commemorates the fact that 170 prisoners of war were housed in this tunnel during World War II. "The POW camp located north of the tunnel on the neighboring Nöggerathstraße in Altendorf, occupied by 644 French prisoners of war, was destroyed in an Allied air raid on April 27, 1944. Of the 315 surviving POWs, 170 were quartered in the tunnel, while the rest were distributed as forced laborers to Krupp factories. Visitors today can experience the conditions in the tunnel for themselves by walking through it: darkness, cold, and damp."
