that's right: "Today offers an idyllic hiking area between the parceled fields."
Test before:
Berlin 1871, the war against France is over. The 830,000-inhabitant city becomes imperial capital. The victorious Prussia celebrates the victory. A population and development boom began, and it soon became clear that the sanitary conditions of the new capital were threatening to derail.
All sewage of the city flowed still above ground, in the so-called gutters, to the rivers.
A solution had to be, because the lack of sewerage presented the city fathers with enormous problems. Berlin acquired in 1889 therefore large fields, including near today's Güterfelde. Specially designed pumping stations for this purpose conveyed the large and small "shops" of Berlin to the open country. Around Berlin, there were several such Rieselfelder, which were connected by nearly 600 kilometers of pipe with the capital.
The leachate was cleaned, the remnants used as fertilizer. Of course, the GDR paid for the import of West Berlin feces as well as for the import of garbage, which the West Berliners produced year after year. Anyone who lived nearby, or drove from Potsdam to Schönefeld Airport, can still remember the smell development.
In 1906, a sewage treatment plant was built in Stahnsdorf, which was extended in 1970.
Nevertheless, only in 1989, after the reunification, the irrigation completely ended.
