The 800 m long connecting canal in Nordhorn is part of the "Left Ems Canal System". The canal is no longer used for shipping, but connects the Ems-Vechte Canal and the cross-flowing Vechte with the Nordhorn-Almelo Canal via the historic "connecting lock".
