In the 1970s, the Vechte, which flows directly past the zoo, is full of curves and often flooded, was straightened. A preserved old arm of the river is now an attractive part of the zoo. Between the straightened Vechte and the zoo there is now a Vechte floodplain, where the zoo's grazing animals find their food on lush Vechte meadows. A well-used cycle and hiking path runs along the banks of the Vechte. From here you have a beautiful view of the outside area of the Nordhorn zoo.
