Romantic quarter in Haidhausen around Preysingstrasse, which consists of one-story old houses, which were mainly built in the 18th century.

Formerly a poor hostel district at the gates of the more expensive city, today the historical remnant of this part of the city's history in the middle of Haidhausen. Definitely worth a flying visit!

It's great that something like this still exists in modern Munich

There are a few cute little houses here that make you feel like a giant. If you're nearby, it's worth taking a little detour to see it from the outside, as the little houses give you an idea of what Munich must have looked like in the past.

Haidhausen was first mentioned in 808 under the name "haidhusir" (meaning: houses on the heath) as a settlement with a church. From Munich, it can be reached via the "gaachen Steig" (roughly: "very steep path"), which over time became the term "Gasteig". The word also stands for the well-known cultural center that marks the border to Haidhausen today. The salt route to Munich led through Haidhausen. The production of clay bricks, which were made from the clay-rich soil, was economically important early on.

In the High Middle Ages, Haidhausen belonged to the domain of the Counts of Wolfratshausen and, after their extinction in 1157, to the Counts of Dießen, who renamed themselves von Andechs; even before the death of the last Count of Andechs, Otto III, in 1248, the area passed to the Duchy of Bavaria of the Wittelsbachs in 1246 at the latest.[1] From then on, the Wolfratshausen district court took the place of the count's middle authority.[2] From 1610 or 1612, Haidhausen, like the neighboring towns of Au and Untergiesing, belonged to the court above the Au. In 1690, Franz Pankratius von Leublfing zu Rhain und Haidhausen was elevated to the rank of imperial count.[3]

From the 17th century to 1827, Haidhausen was the country seat of the Counts of Preysing-Hohenaschau. Their castle later became church property and the monastery buildings that still exist today were built in its place at the eastern end of Preysingstrasse.[4] On the other hand, not far from there (near today's Wiener Platz), small town-like structures with hostels for poorer sections of the population had already developed early on, who worked primarily in the brick factories that were located here. The last of these houses can still be seen today, for example on the Kreppe.[5]

On the high bank of the Isar in Haidhausen, in the area of today's Gasteig, breweries have long used cellar vaults to cool their beer.

In 1835, 10,000 people were already living in Haidhausen. At the end of the 19th century, Haidhausen grew rapidly as a result of industrialization. At this time, the Klinikum rechts der Isar was founded here and the Maximilianeum was built as the end point of Maximilianstraße.
