Joseph Victor von Scheffel (1826-1886)
Scheffel was one of the most popular and widely read German writers during the second half of the 19th century.
Century. The editions of his two main works “Der Trompeter von Säckingen” and “Ekkehard, a story from
the 10th century ”reached record heights. Later he gave a story "Juniperus" and a songbook
"Gaudeamus" and was able to literally rest on his literary laurels afterwards. This enthusiasm
and the unbelievable market success by the standards of the 19th century is what continues to interest the person today
Steer Scheffel’s (Ekkehard is one of the best books I've read, Theodor Fontane).
Scheffel was very fond of the Palatinate and its wine. With the Neustadt bookseller, publisher and winery owner
Eduard Witter had a long friendship between him.
The Scheffelhaus in the middle and the Scheffelwarte above the city of Neustadt are reminiscent of a popular writer
bygone days, whose works have long ceased to be part of the literary common property. In contrast to this is the
Scheffel School Prize Foundation. The aim of this is to reward high school graduates for good German performance with book prizes."In the gabled house that everyone knows, he always kept behind the bars in the selected assortment of the German Spirit Knight. But because the spirit does not live alone In golden book tinsel, Eduard Witter 'sends' the wine of the Rheinpfalz all over the world. He also treats those across the ocean her good liter. "
