During Advent, the windows of the town hall are decorated as an Advent calendar and a door is opened every day

As in most cities, the town hall in Neustadt an der Weinstraße is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. In the past, citizens showcased their self-confidence with such magnificent buildings. But the Neustadt town hall has a slightly different story. It was built in 1729 by the Jesuit order as a college to combat the Reformed faiths through Catholic-oriented education as part of the Counter-Reformation. But the order was so overzealous that it was finally dissolved by Pope Clement XIV in 1773 under pressure from several European rulers. So it happened that the Jesuits disappeared in Catholic countries, of all places, while they continued to be tolerated in some countries independent of the Pope.

Today a large part of the city administration is housed in the town hall. The courtyard can be visited all year round.

The town hall was built in 1729 as a Jesuit college in the baroque style and was used as such until 1773. The city council has met here since 1838. A mighty bronze lion, the heraldic animal of Neustadt, watches over the entrance.
