  • The "German Wine Route" from mid-March to early April is famous for its almond blossoms. The Palatinate almond path stretches around 100 km through the Palatinate wine landscape from Bockenheim to Schweigen-Rechtenbach.
The region of origin is considered to be Asia Minor to Central Asia (core area Persia and Afghanistan). From there spread to Central Asia (China) and Africa/Europe. The Romans settled almond trees in the warmer regions of Germany 1,800 years ago, probably as a companion culture to the vines. In the 15th century, Elector Friedrich IV ordered almonds and walnuts to be grown in the vineyards. The aim was to increase the income of the rural population and extend it into the winter months. This goal was also served by the order of the Bishop of Speyer to plant almonds around today's "Hambach Castle". At the end of the 18th century, widespread cultivation of almond trees in the vineyards of Gimmeldingen (district of Neustadt) is reported because of the low shade effect on the vines. Today Gimmeldingen is known for its large number of around 2,500 almond trees. The “Gimmelding Almond Festival” also takes place in mid/end of March. Tens of thousands of visitors come to the first wine festival in the Palatinate. In the village there is also the "almond nature trail".
