For centuries the square was named after the horseshoe smiths (ferradores) who were concentrated in this part of the city. On its east side, the Palácio dos Viscondes de Balsemão was built in the 18th century. After renovation, the building served as a hostel. Later King Charles Albert of Sardinia lived there, who came to Porto in exile in 1849. The Largo dos Ferradores was given its current name in his honor.

Charming square within walking distance of the cathedral, at weekends there is always a small market with souvenirs. There are also some very good brunch bars to visit.
