Since 1867, Altona, once the second largest city in the Kingdom of Denmark after Copenhagen, was Prussian as part of the province of Schleswig-Holstein. In 1871 it also became part of the newly created German Empire, which was now headed by the Prussian King Wilhelm as Emperor Wilhelm I. This equestrian statue was created in his honor in front of the Altona town hall in 1898. The sisters Schleswig and Holstein sit on the base, above them a youth martially raising his left fist symbolizes the military strength of Prussia.
