With the opening of the Elbphilharmonie, traffic management in western HafenCity was faced with additional challenges. To this end, the State Office for Roads, Bridges and Water has replaced the existing Mahatma Gandhi Bridge with a new, wider bascule bridge. It was opened to traffic in January 2016. The new bridge has a street width of 8.50 meters and a 5 meter wide walkway on the west side. The new construction takes into account the increasing volume of traffic.
