If you want to see the lilies, you should come in June.

The fire lily in the fields around Govelin is a magnificent sight. With its palm-sized orange-red flowers, it shines widely from June to mid-July through the sparse grain fields that are cultivated by the farmer in accordance with an agreement with the nature conservation authority. It could have migrated here with the Neolithic farmers from the steppes of south-east Europe after the last ice age.

As a field weed, the fire lily (Lilium bulbiferum L.) only occurs in all of Germany in northeastern Lower Saxony. Pape's Supreme Court saw them 140 years ago "in abundance in the grain on the ridges between Prisser and Streetz". Because of its beauty, it always ended up in farm gardens, from where the onions with the compost reached new fields. As a cultural follower, the fire lily can therefore also tell of a 5,000-year-old relationship between arable people and their living space.

At Govelin there are still beautiful stocks of fire lilies as field wild flowers, almost unique in Germany. Compared to two years ago, the plants have become more numerous, the fencing against the wild boar seems to be successful.
