The Jeetzel is a small river that flows here at Hitzacker in the Elbe. Jeetzel and Alte Jeetzel completely surround Hitzacker's old town, so that one is always on the water. On the shore are small motor boats and houseboats, a river restaurant and a wonderful promenade running along here.

The Jeetzel rises as Jeetze in the Altmark, crosses the Wendland and flows into the Elbe near Hitzacker. The natural Old Jeetzel is separated from the Jeetzel and is therefore particularly idyllic for canoeing. The river's name is probably derived from the Old Slavic "Jasenu", which means something like "ash stream".
