The beautiful green space is somewhat off the beaten track today, which is probably mainly due to the fact that it is surrounded by multi-lane roads on all sides, which represents a significant devaluation.

Originally, the area was part of the ramparts, then an open sandy area, called the "Sahara of Munich". 1879 Opening of today's landscaped area ("Englischer Garten im Kleinen"), designed by Carl von Effner, a monument is dedicated to him there.

Other monuments (in my opinion indisputable): Friedrich Schiller, Max von Pettenkofer (holder of the first hygiene chair in Germany in 1865 and father of the Munich drinking water supply and alluvial sewer system), Justus von Liebig.

The Wittelsbacher Brunnen forms the western end.

The square to the east, commemorating the victims of National Socialism, does not belong to the beautiful green area, which is unfortunately surrounded by multi-lane streets, but still belongs to Maximiliansplatz.
