The later King Ludwig I arranged as Crown Prince from 1817 planning for this boulevard. Located outside the former Old Town and facing north from the residence in the direction of Schleißheim Palace, the road and flanking buildings were built until the middle of the 19th century. Along this axis, Munich should develop into a city, until today the Ludwigstraße (with the extension of the Leopoldstraße) is the backbone of the city structure.

Beautiful, wide boulevard from Odeonsplatz to Schwabing.

Along with Brienner Straße, Maximilianstraße, and Prinzregentenstraße, Ludwigstraße is one of the four most important boulevards in the Bavarian capital of Munich. Its architectural style reflects the Italian predilection of its builder, King Ludwig I, and features elements of the Italian Renaissance Revival and Romanesque Revival. Ludwigstraße begins at Odeonsplatz and runs in a straight line northeastward, roughly parallel to the Isar River. It crosses the Altstadtring (Old Town Ring) (Oskar-von-Miller-Ring/Von-der-Tann-Straße), widening towards its end into a rectangular square (Geschwister-Scholl-Platz/Professor-Huber-Platz), which is surrounded by the university buildings until it ends at the Siegestor. From there, its extension is called Leopoldstraße.
