Saint Martin, to whom the church / chapel in Oberwesel is consecrated, is - next to Saint Nicholas - probably one of the most popular saints of all. The memorial day of the former officer in the Roman army is November 11th. On the night after the famous “coat sharing”, when he surrendered half his army cloak to a freezing beggar, Jesus Christ appears to him in a dream. He converted to Christianity and was later elected Bishop of Tours (France) - initially against his will.
Many should have fond childhood memories of lantern handicrafts in kindergarten and elementary school, the evening lantern parade through the dark village / district - and of course of the delicious “Weckmann”.

Around 1350 began with the construction of the present St. Martin's Church. The Liebfrauenkirche was the model for her architecture. With the same basic concept, however, the tower of the Martinskirche was designed quite differently. Since the church was located high above the city in a place important for the defense, the tower was converted into a defense tower. It is the most convincing example of Gothic sacral defense architecture in the Rhineland.

Very beautiful church located on the outskirts of Oberwesel.
The Catholic St. Martin's Church (white church) rises on the northwest edge of the city at its highest point and thus impressively defines the townscape. The mighty bell tower was originally part of the city fortifications.
The church was essentially built in the first half of the 14th century based on the model of the Church of Our Lady (Red Church). The tower was expanded into a defensive tower after the Wesel War in 1390/91 in connection with the fortification of the Niederburg suburb (a tie rod in the top square tower floor is dendrochronologically dated to 1435). The northern side aisle was built in a much simplified form at the beginning of the 16th century.
