The urban cattle herder from Oberwesel am Rhein had an difficult life. During the day he had to lead the cows of the citizens to the pastures, at night he held the office of a fire guard. Its guard room was high up on the 6th floor of the cowherd tower and the fire bell hung above it. So every day he had to climb the high tower using simple ladders. Certainly he also looked for enemies at times, after all his office was located on the particularly endangered western city wall at Michelfeld. The fortifications still surround the city almost completely over a distance of almost three kilometers. monumente-online.de/de expenditure/2011/1/welterbe-mit-16-tuermen.php#.Xwy2FOdCQ2w

The Kuhhirtenturm with its raised suspension bridge is certainly one of the most striking and beautiful defense towers on the medieval city wall.

This is where the shepherds who looked after the city’s pastures once lived.
