Four golden ladies or maidens surround the obelisk erected in 1825 at Hotmannspief. The cold water flowing from their jugs invites every thirsty person to pause for a moment. The site of the fountain, built in 1825 according to designs by Adam Franz Leydel, is historic. As early as the 14th century, there was a public fountain on this spot, which was enlarged and fitted with a basin in the 16th century. Perhaps this is the origin of its name, as the carters, also called Hotmannspief, were allowed to water their horses at this fountain after their journeys.

Fountain monument erected in 1825 at a water point that has existed since prehistoric times. The building material "bluestone" is also the typical building material of many historical houses in Aachen.

The location of the fountain on Sandkaulstrasse - Sandkaulbach in Aachen is historical. This fountain was already documented in the city's accounts in the 14th century, around 1334. At that time and in the following two centuries, it was a simple so-called "running fountain". The fountain was then made larger and provided with a round water basin and an attachment around the 16th century. Since 1825, four virgins have been observing all directions. First, the obelisk was erected, the design of which was by city architect Adam Franz Friedrich Leydel. A few years later, the figures were added, the content of which is unclear.
The Hotmannspief was used intensively as a horse trough (at a time when there was still a lot of carriage traffic on Alexanderstrasse).
