Right in the heart of Aachen, where the cathedral shows its chocolate side, is the enchanting Münsterplatz. It is the ideal place to sit outside in one of the beautiful cafés or restaurants in the sunshine and enjoy the special atmosphere of the old town.
The imposing Aachen Cathedral, which was the first building in Germany to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, is not only a fantastic photo motif in spring when the magnolias are in bloom. Directly opposite, on the site of today's Sparkasse building, was the Elisabethspital, where the Sisters of Saint Elisabeth cared for the poor for centuries. A stroll through the beautiful little shops with their attractive range of books, stylish fashion, jewelery and special patisserie is also a highlight on Münsterplatz. For example, the »Domlädchen« right next to the playful »Möschebrunnen« is the oldest sweets shop in Aachen, where sweets from all over the world have been sold since 1896. And if you like it particularly lively, the best thing to do is to visit the Münsterplatz for the popular Saturday weekly market with regional products.

Of course, the cathedral square is named after the cathedral of Aachen, the cathedral, whose different structural elements can best be recognized from here. But it is also a central place of Aachen's old town with cafes, and ice cream parlors and often weekly market stalls, on the warm season almost always play street musicians.

Next to the market place the central place in Aachen. There is always something going on here.
Street music, cafes, ice cream parlors and people on the way to and from the cathedral.
