Under Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm, foundations for the Catholic parish church were laid on the Rastatt market square in 1702. The War of the Spanish Succession (1701 - 1714) prevented their construction. The construction work was suspended under the reign of Margravine Sibylla Augustas. It was only under their son Ludwig Georg that the town church was rescheduled from 1730. The citizens had repeatedly asked for the construction. Construction began in 1756. Completion and consecration took place in 1764 under the government of Margrave August Georg.

The tombstone of the architect Johann Peter Ernst Rohrer is in the porch of the church.

The church was built in 1756 by the margravial master builder Johann Peter Ernst Rohrer, after Domenico Egidio Rossi laid the foundations for the church in 1701. In 1764 the church was consecrated. At the entrance is the tombstone of Johann Peter Ernst Rohrer.

The facade, which is quite simple on the sides, is decorated on the front with four great saints. These are:

        - Saint Donatus, as protector from thunderstorms

        - Saint Charles Borromeo, against the plague

        - Saint Anthony of Padua, against flooding

        - Saint Florian, against fire
