The Karlsruhe Gate was the first main gate of the Rastatt Fortress. It served as a passageway for the Frankfurt-Basel highway. The fortress was abandoned in 1890. Its military appearance (crenellated battlements and loopholes) was only hinted at architecturally.

Once one of only two remaining main gates of the original five gates of the former Federal Fortress of Rastatt, built during the time of the German Confederation from 1842 to 1852 to secure the border with France.

After the annexation of Alsace, the fortress lost its strategic importance. In accordance with the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles, the fortress was then dismantled from 1890 onwards, meaning it was largely demolished. Today, the gate marks the entrance to the casemates, the underground, partially excavated, defensive passages of the Rastatt Fortress. These can be visited on guided tours.

One of the two main gates in the north-south direction of the former Rastatt federal fortress (1842 - 1890). With neo-Gothic battlements and turrets. A few meters away is the entrance to the casemates of "Bastion 27". A former loopholed factory that was used to monitor the moat. Together with the Kehler Tor at the south exit, the Karlsruher Tor is one of the two surviving gates of the federal fortress.
