In 1723 and 1728, earthquakes destroyed parts of Rastatt - including parts of the castle. In 1739, a monument in the form of a fountain was erected on the market square for Saint Alexius of Edessa, the patron saint of earthquakes, lightning and storms. The Rastattans hoped for his intercession to protect them from further earthquakes.

The people of Rastatt hoped his intercession would protect them from future earthquakes.

The fountain was designed and built by Peter Ernst Rohrer as a memorial commissioned by Margrave Ludwig Georg.
