The nature reserve Sandheiden and dunes near Sandweier and Iffezheim is located in the urban district of Baden-Baden and the district of Rastatt in Baden-Württemberg. The 240.7 hectare area with the identification number 2,230 has been a nature reserve since November 8, 2011.
The nature reserve, which consists of four sub-areas, is located between the Baden-Baden district of Sandweier in the south, Iffezheim in the south-west and Rastatt in the north in the natural areas of the Northern Upper Rhine Lowland and the Hardt plains of the Upper Rhine Plain. There was previously the French military compound Puységur.
It is considered one of the most important sandy areas in Baden-Württemberg. In the habitat of rare and protected animal and plant species, goats and sheep contribute to the preservation of habitats. By not feeding them and thus removing unwanted nutrients from the area, low-growing plants such as sanddrops, thyme and silver grass are encouraged. At 21 meters high, one of the highest dunes in Baden can be seen in the forest. The subsoil consists of gravel soil; it was blown over by shifting sands at the end of the Ice Age.
