The Goethe monument in Berlin's Großer Tiergarten is a work by the sculptor Fritz Schaper (1841-1919), a prominent representative of the Berlin school of sculpture.

The Carrara marble figural group was inaugurated in 1880, temporarily replaced by a cast concrete copy towards the end of the 20th century to protect it from the elements and restored to its original location 130 years after its inauguration.

Dedicated to one of the greatest German poets, erected in 1880

The marble figure of Goethe stands on a pedestal. Goethe is depicted standing, his legs slightly bent with his right leg in front. The tip of his right foot protrudes slightly over the round edge of the plinth. The poet is wearing a historical costume that corresponds to the Weimar court costume of the late 18th century. Over his justo corps he wears a long coat with a cape. While Goethe gathers the coat up to his hips with his right hand, in which he is holding a scroll, the thick coat falls down along the left side of his body in undulating folds, only held in place by the left hand resting on his side. At the back the coat falls down to the plinth and piles up over the tree stump-like support that gives the marble figure the necessary static support. The head, which Schaper designed based on the famous so-called à-tempo bust, which Christian Daniel Rauch had modelled in 1820 in Weimar in competition with Christian Friedrich Tieck within 3 days and which, in numerous repetitions, still shapes the image of Goethe as an "Olympian", is slightly turned towards the right side of the body (left from the viewer's perspective), analogous to the original.
