Planned in the 1990s during Helmut Kohl's chancellorship and occupied by then-Chancellor Schröder in 2001, the Federal Chancellery is the largest government building in the world. This doesn't mean, however, that other governments have fewer staff – they are simply spread across several buildings.

The monumental building was designed by architects Axel Schultes and Charlotte Frank. It is part of the complex of buildings in the Spreebogen area known as the "Federal Ribbon."
