Eschenheimer Tower

Highlight • Monument

The first tower at this point was built in 1343 with the third and last city wall and replaced by the current one in 1400. For 400 years it was one of five entrances to the city. Access was via an artificially created moat, which, among other things, was fed by the Main, through a gate in this tower.

Stones and earth were stored on the first floor above the gate to block access in the event of a defense, the tower guard lived on the floor above. This floor was inhabited until 1956.

When the city wall was torn down / razed in 1806-12, the tower should also believe in it, but then remained as a memorial with three others from the former 60. Today it is the oldest structure in Frankfurt city center that has been preserved in its original state.

If you look closely, you can see nine holes in the weather vane that form the number nine. And it came in like this:
When a poacher was caught, sentenced to death and locked up at the top of the tower until he was executed, the squeaky weather vane on top robbed him of his last nights of sleep. So he had his last wish presented to the council in the Römer: He wanted to shoot a 9 into the weather vane with his rifle with nine bullets, so that every Frankfurter would still think of him after his death. The council didn't think he could do it and promised him his life and freedom if he did.
As you can see today, he made it and not only got his freedom back, but also the tower guard's daughter, who had fallen in love with him and the council made him the forester of Frankfurt.
