The Alte Oper was badly damaged in World War II. The City Council wanted to leave the remains (in some cases there were also plans to blow up the remains) In the fifties, a citizens' initiative was founded to rebuild the Old Opera House. The reopening took place in the presence of the then Federal President Carstensen on 28.08.1981.
A visit, however, is only offered as a guided tour from 12 persons with prior registration (mailto: soeren.appuhn@t-online.de).

The rebuilt Alte Oper is one of the concert halls of the city. A lot of classical music, but also pop concerts take place here. The Opera Square is great for sitting in the café and enjoying Frankfurt.

The construction costs of the Frankfurt Opera were then planned at 2 million marks. By 1880, it had cost a whopping 20 million marks.
In 1944 it was largely destroyed in a bombing raid and in 1951 they built a new opera house. In 1965 they wanted to demolish the ruins completely, but thanks to civil protest and the largest fundraiser in Germany until then, it was rebuilt to the original faithfully in 1981.
