The Werden district nestles in the Ruhr valley between Essen and Heidhausen, and is also known as the pearl of the Ruhr. The former abbey town of Werden lies below Lake Baldeney and has a beautiful old building that extends around the St. Ludgerus Basilica.

One of the most beautiful parts of Essen is certainly Werden. The district of Werden is located in the south of the city in the beautiful Ruhr valley. The federal road 224 leads over the Ruhr bridge and guides the motorists through the town center in the direction of Heidhausen / Velbert. Werden has many old, interesting monuments that were not destroyed in the Second World War. The origin of the place is traced back to the missionary Liudger (Ludgerus), who founded a Benedictine monastery on the Werth (... an area protected from the Ruhr floods) around 799.

Soon people settled around the monastery and the place grew considerably. Werden received city rights, its own city walls and gates as early as 1317. About 100 years later, a fort was built in Werden, some of the foundation walls of which were recently found while the canal was being worked on. Like Essen-Kettwig, Werden was a cloth-making town. The fine cloth factories stood on the large parking lot above the abbey church until the mid-1970s.

Essen Werden has many beautiful half-timbered houses and nice little shops to offer.
