The Neukirch lock on the banks of the Hardenberg is inconspicuous, but is of great importance for the development of the Ruhr shipping industry and thus becoming. It was built in 1776-78. With another 15 locks, it made it possible to transport coal from the Mark county to the Rhine. The lock chamber was expanded in 1829 and 1844. The panels in the chamber and on the bank tell the story of this building, which was used until 1931. The "Schlagd", a rock edge lying across the Ruhr, which could be circumnavigated, was only removed in 1933 in connection with the construction of the weir for the Baldeneysee. Since then, the west lock channel has become a still water that has no direct connection to the Ruhr, the so-called "Heyerstrang". After several renovations, only one of the four former lock gates can be seen in the lock today.
