marble broenThe bridge was built in 1739-1745 in connection with the construction of Christiansborg Palace. It crosses Frederiksholms Kanal and connects Ny Vestergade with Christiansborg Ridebane. The name comes from the fact that the bridge's sidewalks are clad in Norwegian marble. The marble bridge was designed by one of the builders of the castle, Nikolaj Eigtved (1701-1754). It was originally intended to be a drawbridge, but the architect wanted the bridge to be a majestic entrance to the castle. The entire complex is an expression of the autocratic monarchy, for which the castle became the focal point.
