As early as 1937, the mystical Oltersteine were placed under nature protection as Ice Age boulders. Various researchers assume an altar where offerings to the old Saxon god Krodo were made. The Sassenchronik shows and describes Krodo as a man who stands on a pillar on a large fish and holds a vessel with flowers in his right hand and a raised wheel in his left.
