The fountain is a reconstruction of a Renaissance fountain, which was originally created around 1580 by Alexander Colin for the Neugebäude Palace.
During the construction of Schönbrunn, it was brought here. The lower basin is supported by four lion sculptures, which are reminiscent of those from the Alhambra in Granada. The center of the fountain depicts figures wearing mussel shells on their heads, into which the water from the upper basin is directed.
