The Schanzenturm (Schanzen Tower) stands on a hill rising 28 meters above sea level in the Schanzenpark, which was still called "Heidberg von Heimechhude" in the 13th century. The former water tower, once the largest such structure in Europe, was built between 1907 and 1910 by the Hamburg Waterworks (HWW). It was designed by HWW architect Wilhelm Schwarz.
