Tips

  • The fact that the densely populated Hamburg district of Eimsbüttel was once a wooded area is perhaps only reminded today by the street name Im Gehölz.
In old Eimsbüttel, the Gehölz was a traditional excursion destination for Hamburg residents.
The Eimsbüttel Park, which the locals often simply call the "Weiher", was later built on this site.
In 1832, the senator and later mayor Ascan Wilhelm Lutteroth bought part of the site and converted it into a landscape park. He integrated the Ottersbek, which had been dammed to form fish ponds, and the old oak trees into his design.
The pond is the only remaining evidence of the former stream, as most of it runs underground.
When Hamburg grew rapidly towards the end of the 19th century, the Eimsbüttel residential district soon lacked open space. To counteract this development, Hamburg decided in 1892 to buy the park and preserve it as a public recreational area.
Three years later, it was made available to the public.
A footpath was laid out around the large pond and access was created from the street Am Weiher.
The Eimsbüttel Park represents a form of inland park with peripheral development that was atypical for Hamburg in the 19th century. However, this ideal location, surrounded by residential buildings, makes it a popular local recreation destination for the population. In addition to the pond, the old, diverse tree population, the beautiful playground, the paddling pool, which is filled with water in the summer, and, since 2006, a café are also special attractions.
