Hiking
The lake is about 180 hectares in size and up to 14.7 m deep. Together with the Ratzeburger See and the Kleiner Küchensee, it encloses the island town of Ratzeburg.
The division into the large and small kitchen lake came about when what is still known today as the small railway embankment between the lake shore and the cathedral island was raised between 1906 and 1908 in order to extend the Ratzeburg small railway to the south-east.
