A fairly large, wonderful moor in which you can study the individual stages of development better than in many others. On the south bank, the heavy silting is already visible, further along the path it is still very watery. In the solid background, a doe and her calf scurried past and on some small islands we found a mystery in the form of white islands, which were unfortunately separated from us by water for a few meters, so we were unable to take a direct look. However, we are hoping for an answer from Nabu and/or the Salem district forestry office.

There is also an observation tower for cranes, but unfortunately we did not see any, as we were a little too early in the year for that. The direct path along the moor was not closed, but blocked by a barrier, so we took the path around the top. But that doesn't matter at all, because even so, the moor is impressive like few others.

It is one of the oldest nature reserves in Schleswig-Holstein: the Salem Moor. Located southeast of Ratzeburg, the approximately 690 hectare area is the habitat of several rare animal and plant species. One of the best known representatives is probably the adder. The Salem Moor is one of the few regions in Schleswig-Holstein where the small to medium-sized poisonous snake can still be found.

Cotton grass, moor frog, sundew and grass snake: the Salem Moor is the habitat of many rare animal and plant species. Its diversity makes it unique. A raised moor, natural mixed forests and a chain of different lakes form this nature reserve, which is one of the oldest in Schleswig-Holstein. The lakes are impressive because of their diversity. The nutrient-poor Garrensee, the Schwarze Kuhle moor lake and two other nutrient-rich lakes offer a home to very different inhabitants. The male moor frogs, which turn blue for a few days during their mating season in spring, attract visitors to a special spectacle.
