This sculpture was created by the artist couple Matschinsky-Denninghoff on the occasion of the 'Sculpture Boulevard' exhibition organized by the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, which was realized in 1987 to celebrate Berlin's 750th anniversary.
It soon became a symbol of the divided city. After reunification, perception changed and the metal sculpture was interpreted as a symbol of reunification.
