Hiking
Since the Rhine is 250 meters wide here, it was previously used as a roadstead for the transport ships, which since the 17th century could only pass through the upstream "Binger Loch" with pilots.
In 1893–94 the Binger Loch was widened to 30 meters and in 1966–74 it was expanded to its current 120 meters. With additional tail units, pilots are no longer required since the 1990s.
