Melaten Cemetery is Cologne's central cemetery. The name Melaten is based on the French word for sickness, "malade." From the 12th century onward, a leper colony, which included the Melaten estate, was located on the grounds outside the city gates. Designated a historical monument in 1980, Melaten Cemetery is now a popular destination, primarily due to the many prominent figures buried there.
