The Propylaea at Königsplatz is a monumental gateway in the Neoclassical style, built between 1846 and 1862 according to plans by Leo von Klenze. Commissioned by King Ludwig I, they symbolize the entrance to the art and science landscape of Königsplatz. Inspired by the gateways of the Acropolis in Athens, the Propylaea simultaneously represent the ideal Greek state and commemorate the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon. Today, they are considered an important architectural monument of the 19th century and a monument to national and cultural identity.

The Propylaea was built between 1848–1862 as a symbol of German-Greek friendship.
It is modeled on the entrance to the Acropolis and used to be the city gate. The Propylaea is not accessible, but can only be viewed from the outside.

As early as 1816, consideration was given to building the Propylaea, but it took 30 years before the order was placed. Klenze painted a picture of the Propylaea before it was built to advertise his project. When King Ludwig I had to abdicate in 1848, the project was called into question again - not least because Munich no longer needed a city gate at that time, since the city had already grown far beyond Königsplatz.
