The Giralda wonderfully sums up many centuries of history in its own physiognomy. The confluence of the different architectural styles that characterise it is a reflection of the cultures that inhabited Seville. The result, eclectic and unique, fascinates any traveller.

The first section of the Giralda is in the Almohad style. The architects Ibn Basso and Ali de Gomara were the architects of this minaret built for the city's great mosque. An earthquake in 1356 caused the four bronze spheres that crowned the tower to fall.

The bell body is in the Renaissance style, and was designed by Hernán Ruiz in the 16th century. At its peak, 104 metres high, you can see a very special weather vane: the Giraldillo, another symbol of Seville.

This name only refers to the church tower of the Cathedral of Seville. It is possible to climb the tower, but you do not climb stairs, but rather a ramp that winds around the core. In the past, during the time of Moorish rule over Seville, this was a minaret and the muezzin is said to have ridden up here on a donkey - according to the city tour.

The Giralda is the cathedral tower.

It has the classic structure of the Almohad minarets that would continue to be used for centuries in most of the Mudejar bell towers.

It is composed of a central prism with a square base, surrounded by four external walls. Between both structures are the ramps that go up, which in the case of this tower and due to its large size, even allowed access on horseback.

The exterior decoration is based on double-leaf or mullioned openings, either with semicircular or polylobed horseshoe arches, surrounded by alfiz and supported by another large pointed lobed arch (swollen). In the side streets there are mural arches that, seen from a distance, look like a network of rhombuses. The great height of this minaret makes it stand out from all the others, influencing its decoration in vertical stripes that give it a special airiness.

In the bell tower, we can appreciate the magnificent work of its windows, where the arches and capitals of Caliphate origin stand out. The last body of the Almohad tower was replaced due to the deterioration suffered in the 16th century by Hernán Ruiz with a Renaissance finish on which a four-metre-high bronze female statue rotates, representing “victorious faith” called the Giraldillo, which gives its name to the tower.
