One of the elements that characterize the cityscape is the imposing, more than 6-meter-high Marian column between the town hall and the upper church, which is closely linked to the history of Duderstadt in several ways. It is a plague column that was erected in 1711 by the town pastor Herwig Böning as a thank you for being saved from the plague that was rampant here in 1683.
