One of the elements that characterize the cityscape is the imposing, more than 6-meter-high Marian column between the town hall and the upper church, which is closely linked to the history of Duderstadt in several ways. It is a plague column that was erected in 1711 by the town pastor Herwig Böning as a thank you for being saved from the plague that was rampant here in 1683.Closely related to the city are of course the two heraldic lions under a D for Duderstadt on the sandstone base, which face St. Cyriakus and on the other side of which the Mainz wheel is assigned as a symbol of the sovereignty of the region, complemented by a crossed bishop's staff and scepter as a sign of the secular and spiritual rule of the sovereign.duderstadt-guide.de/mariens%C3%A4ulehoenig-kaufungen.de/projekte/mariensaeule-duderstadt
