Outside the ramparts, the Obertor and Westertor ponds have been preserved as moat remains from the early modern defense systems. In addition to their former defensive function, they were used for fish farming, ice making and washing clothes.
As part of the state exhibition "Nature in Urban Development" in 1994, the Obertorteich was given a renatured shore zone.
