Church of St. Elisabethen from 1864, Basel
The Elisabethenkirche in Basel is located in the city center right next to the Theater Basel. It is considered the most important neo-Gothic church in Switzerland and is a testament to historicism in terms of architecture and furnishings.
The new building, donated by Christoph Merian and Margarethe Merian-Burckhardt, was built between 1857 and 1864 according to plans by Ferdinand Stadler. This prevailed in an architectural competition in the second round against Joseph Caspar Jeuch. Jeuch managed to have some influence on the build after the first lap. The founder was never to see his church finished, because he died in 1858 shortly before the cornerstone was laid. Christoph Merian financed the construction of the church with the intention of erecting a "memorial against the evil spirit of the time", i.e. against the de-Christianization of state and society. It was the first new church to be built in Basel since the Reformation.

The church was supposed to be demolished in the 1980s, but this was prevented by interested citizens.
The organ was built in 1861-1864 by the organ builder Joseph Merklin (Paris/Brussels).

The interior of the church is characterized by the building type of a three-nave vaulted hall church. This is limited to the west by the five-sided choir polygon and to the east by the vestibule under the tower. The galleries are directly accessible via entrances in the side facades, as is the former private box of the donor couple opposite the stone pulpit. The tower, which is open to the public, towers 72 meters above the towers of the Basel Minster.

The Elisabethenkirche in Basel is located in the center of the city, right next to the Theater Basel. It is considered the most important neo-Gothic church in Switzerland and its architecture and furnishings are testament to historicism.
Towards the end of the 13th century, a chapel was built on what is now Elisabethenstrasse. At that time, the municipal hospital offered supervised accommodation to the poor, the elderly or those in need of care from the city of Basel. The chapel, with its adjacent cemetery, was probably built on the initiative of the hospital. The chapel of a hermitage of St. Elisabeth was first mentioned in 1301. Two sisters looked after the complex and from 1315 a priest was appointed to read masses, requiems or consecrations.[2] What the buildings looked like is not known.

The demolition of the chapel and hermitage was approved by the council on March 3, 1515.
Thanks to a generous donation from Hieronymus Bär, construction of a new, larger church could begin in 1515. Construction took around a year. A cemetery was again built next to the church where the hospital's deceased were buried.

After the Reformation in 1529, it became a branch church of the Basel Minster. In 1643, the church was renovated and in 1656 a southern aisle was added. A second renovation followed in 1827. The church was also the garrison church for the soldiers of the civil troops from the nearby Blömlein barracks. They were allowed to attend church services under the supervision of their sergeant. They always sat in the gallery.

A spacious room with slender columns, light-flooded glass windows and flexible seating: This is the neo-Gothic Elisabethenkirche in the center of Basel. With modern audio technology and spotlights, it offers a unique ambience for banquets, concerts, exhibitions, product presentations, fashion shows or lectures. At night, with its spotlights, lighting effects and music, it can be transformed into a unique ballroom for discos, balls or other celebrations. The building is rented out by the ecumenical association "Offene Kirche Elisabethen", which can offer social, cultural and spiritual events and services for Basel and the region through rental income as well as donations and cooperation.
