St. Alban Ferry Wild Maa, Rhine, Basel
Four pedestrian ferries connect Greater Basel with Lesser Basel. These are roll-on ferries (a special type of cable ferry); they are powered by the current of the Rhine. Today, they are an integral part of Basel's cityscape.
As early as 1853, one year before the first ferry began operating in Basel, a ferry service across the Rhine existed at the Birskopf. At that time, the Birskopf was still outside the city, so this ferry only later became part of the Basel ferries. In 1873, service was discontinued due to insufficient demand. At the urging of the Birsfelden residents, the service was resumed in 1906, slightly higher upstream from its original location. In 1944, the Birsfelden ferry, along with the three other Basel ferries at the time, was given the name "Ueli" (Ueli) during a ferry festival. However, after the Birsfelden power plant and its associated bridge were built in 1954, the ferry disappeared for good.
