The old courthouse on the Havermarkt was built in a neoclassical style. Characteristic are the symmetrical structure, stately facades and details such as columns and ornaments.

On the site of the old Hasselt courthouse, a monastery of the Cellebroeders was built in the 15th century. After 1790, this monastery served as a prison and courthouse. On 11 November 1918, the old Hasselt courthouse was set on fire by retreating Germans. In 1923, a plan was developed to build a new courthouse on the old site. The city council organised a competition for the construction. The design by Brussels architect Jerôme Vermeersch was chosen from the entries. The building was completed in 1936, after years of delay due to financial problems. In 2012, the judicial services moved to the new courthouse at the station. In March 2017, the Buildings Agency sold the building to project developer Kolmont - Tans Group to have the building redeveloped. Where justice used to be administered, there will now be around 30 apartments with space for three shops and offices. Important detail: the historically valuable facades will be preserved. The design is by architectural firms Michel Janssen and Laurijssens Architects. Kolmont is the involved project developer.

The former courthouse on Hasselt's Havermarkt, one of the province's most monumental buildings, is getting a complete makeover. Where justice once was administered, there will now be around 30 apartments, along with three shops and offices. An important detail: the historically valuable facades will be preserved.

A step back in time: in the 19th century, the facades were further embellished with decorative stucco, and in the 20th century, extensive renovations were carried out.
The new building was built in 1934 based on plans by architect Vermeersch. The design, in its eclectic interwar architecture, won a competition organized by the then-government. Today, the facade with its distinctive corner tower is known throughout Flanders thanks to the series "De Smaak van De Keyser" (The Taste of De Keyser).
