The old prison in Hasselt had 58 cells. To tackle the overcrowding, a second bed was added in 41 cells and at peak times the detainees even stayed with three in the cell, two beds and one mattress on the floor. The construction of a new "super prison" on Zwarte-Brugstraat was more than welcome.
Against the facade of the old prison hangs a memorial plaque for the five victims of a liberation action by the Secret Army on June 10, 1944.
