The former monastery and Winter Chapel form the library's new home in the center of Hamme. The renovated building is full of charm. The position of the columns and pillars in the chapel determined the design; a new mezzanine adds an extra level.

White shelving was chosen to emphasize the light in the space. Color accents come from the collection itself and the seating elements in shades of blue and green, the colors of the municipality of Hamme. The curved lines of the round shelving units for the informational books give the space a more informal atmosphere.

This is the library of Hamme, located on the Marktplein. The building has a historical appearance with a characteristic gable and was formerly used as a monastery. The sculptures and architecture give it a recognizable charm that contributes to the historical center of the city.

        Historical background:

        • Convent of the Sisters of Mercy: The building originally served as a convent for the Sisters of Mercy, a religious order that was committed to education and care. The convent was founded in the second half of the 19th century.
        • Architecture: The neo-Gothic style of the chapel, as can be seen from the gable and high windows, is typical of religious buildings from that period. The sculpture above the entrance is also a reminder of the religious function of the building.
        • Current function: Today, the former chapel has been converted into the library of Hamme. This is a fine example of the repurposing of heritage, whereby the building has been given a new public function without losing its historical value. It offers space for books, lectures, and other cultural activities, and is an important part of the socio-cultural life in the city.
