In 1929, the NV Antwerpse Machiensteenbakkerij was founded in the Hogenakker district. The company grounds originally extended over 40 hectares. For the production of bricks, the clay was first excavated manually with small boats. Later they switched to mechanical shovels or dredges on railway tracks. A machine could excavate the clay to a depth of up to 13 m. One of the resulting wells is even 15 m to 20 m deep.
Over time the wells filled with water. The water level of the wells remains more or less constant because they are connected to each other and to the Vlierbeek. Clay is no longer extracted in part of the area. This area, the Roomacker domain, is managed as a nature reserve.
